What are kozak sequences?

Kozak sequences-

  • In case of eukaryotes for the initiation of translation the smaller subunit of ribosome first recognize the methylated cap that marks the 5' end of the m-RNA.
  • It then scan along the sequence untill it locates the initiation codon (AUG), where they are joined by large subunits. This scanning process require helicases that hydrolyse ATP.
  • The selection of the initiating AUG is mediated by specific nuclotides called as Kozak sequence,5'ACCAUGG3'.
